FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Esko has launched hugely expanded Software Platform release 18.0.1. Among the key highlights is the availability of a macOS-supported 64bit version of ArtPro. The new release also features ArtPro+ action lists in Automation Engine. The newest version of Esko Software Platform ensures full compatibility of all plug-ins with Adobe Creative Cloud 2019, including Studio, DeskPack, and Dynamic Content. “These latest improvements are just the tip of the iceberg. We have many more in this release,” says De Proost. Learn more about the platform in the inside pages of this issue. International inks supplier Siegwerk has announced price rise across all its packaging inks and varnishes in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) starting February 1, 2019. Citing throughout the year rise in costs for raw material categories, such as photoinitiators, UV monomers, acrylic resins, pigments, isocyanates and specialty additives, with further increases experienced in Q4-2018 as the key reasons behind the rise. Also coloured pigments and photoinitiators are expected to remain highly affected by drastic supply disruptions amid stricter environmental regulations in key supply markets. Also, together with press manufacturer, Komori, the company has developed a brand new, revolutionary high sensitivity UV ink exclusively for Komori’s energy saving H-UV/ LED curing system offering best-in-class print results. These novel ‘K-Supply UV inks’ provide consistent colour print quality, high-level versatility and hardness as well as an ecofriendly performance. They are characterized by top-level definition and press stability and match all Lithrone H-UV press requirements. Some other key collaborations include Manugraph and Condot coming together to boost efficiency for Binani Printing Press; and Indian press manufacturers Ronald Web Offset and Prakash Offset choosing QIPC for measuring and control equipment on their presses. Also in the web offset segment is manroland Goss Group acquiring GWS Printing Systems, the Dutch specialist in used web offset equipment. Chandni Industries, a Playing Cards manufacturer, knows, which is the best card to play while investing in new technology; the recent addition

being a Heidelberg SM 74. With a production need of about 150000 sheets per day, the INR 21 cr. turnover company today fulfils half of its production need on the new Heidelberg machine. Another major installation is Canon imagePRESS C8000VP by Telangana’s iCards Printers. This is the first in the state and second imagePRESS for iCards. In the digital finishing space, Ludhiana-based Dulari Digital has acquired advanced digital finishing capabilities and enhanced profitability with the installation of the MGI JetVarnish 3D with iFoil from Konica Minolta. One of the largest manufacturers of self-adhesive labels for product identification, Noida based Prakash Labels has installed Edale FL3. Impressed by the versatility of the FL3, the ISO 9001-2015 certified company has opted for a fully automated, 10 colour FL3-430 wide with a label and film pack. Printmann Group has just ordered its 2nd Lombardi Synchroline press from VINSAK, which is among the top installs in narrow web market and largest number of installs in India. This order is placed less than 14 months after the first press was delivered to Printmann’s Rabale facility in 2017. Monotech Systems has installed the 2nd JETSCI System in Bangladesh. Another key development recently has been Amcor’s new Bharuch plant starting operation. Amcor has opened this new home care packaging site dedicated to Unilever products in India. Find all this in this interesting December issue of PRESSIdeas. Also just don’t miss to read about the flexible printed circuit that enables MTC Jacket which provides the wearer with warmth on demand during fluctuating outer temperatures without adding the bulk through traditional layering while dressing. “We cooperatively developed a brand new, revolutionary high sensitivity UV ink exclusively for Komori’s energy saving H-UV/ LED curing system offering best-in-class print results. These novel ‘K-Supply UV inks’ provide consistent colour print quality, high-level versatility and hardness as well as an eco-friendly performance,” says Bruno Delanoë, Regional Sales manager EMEA at Siegwerk. “They are characterized by top-level definition and press stability and match all Lithrone H-UV press requirements.” The newly-developed inks were designed and thoroughly tested in Siegwerk’s Center of Excellence in Aarberg, Switzerland, the company’s Center of Excellence for UV inks and varnishes. The alliance has built upon Komori’s H-UV/ LED technology with more than 880 installations worldwide including 218 installed presses in Europe. The presses in production range from 26’’ to 40’’ sheetfed and up to 38’’ web printing. Today, Komori is one of

the leading experts in low energy curing, offering its customers an innovative UV curing system that uses one H-UV lamp and runs with high-sensitivity H-UV/ LED inks from selected suppliers. In comparison to conventional UV curing, the amount of CO2 emissions from Komori’s H-UV/ LED system is approximately one quarter. This exclusive Komori instant drying system doesn’t produce ozone, ensures very low heat generation and offers superior print quality, reliability as well as an excellent economic and eco-friendly performance. “At Komori, we design our printing presses to deliver the optimum print result with unrivalled quality, reliable performance, and superior colour intensity,“ says Peter Minis, Marketing Manager at Komori Europe. “Teaming up with Siegwerk proved to be essential in Komori’s endeavour to strengthen and broaden the K-Supply brand and product range. This partnership enables us to fully exploit all possibilities of our H-UV/ LED technology, and make them available, directly to our customers.” Under the “K-Supply” brand, Komori offers its customers a lineup of special consumables and materials that are officially approved for the company’s printing presses. Siegwerk has a standardized and reliable process when it comes to implementing carefully-selected raw materials and intermediate products. It is closely monitored by the company’s quality control team, and fully compliant with the most stringent safety and environmental standards. This also includes compliance with changing regulations and

reclassifications in the EuPIA (European Printing Ink Association) Exclusion Policy. Just recently the commonly used photoinitiators Omnirad-369, Ethyl-4dimethylaminobenzoat (EDB), 2-Ethylhexyl4-dimethyl-aminobenzoat (EHA) and 4-Phenylbenzophenon (4-PBZ) have been reclassified to CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction) Category 1B and therefore are voluntarily banned in the printing industry. In compliance with the

European regulations, all inks still containing these photoinitiators have to be labelled as toxic for reproduction and, according to the EUPIA rules, have to be reformulated usually within six months. As a leader in product safety, Siegwerk promptly reacted and replaced these materials with substitutes equivalent in terms of performance and conformity for food packaging but without harmful properties. The company has always been on the forefront of ink innovation and

performance while always complying with highest safety standards. All its inks and varnishes are formulated and manufactured in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice, taking into consideration many individual and varying parameters relating to substrate, application and end use, enabling fully tailored solutions that meet all individual customer needs.

Chandni Industries Pvt. Ltd. - Playing all their cards correctly Chandni Industries, a Playing Cards manufacturer, knows, which is the best card to play while investing in new technology. The recent addition being a Heidelberg SM 74. Mr.Vipul Jain of Chandni Industries has been in the business of manufacturing Playing Cards for the last over half a century now, and still going strong. A man of few words, his father started the business way back in 1961 with the age old Chandler machines, as was the availability back then. The company today produces Playing Cards, PVC Playing Cards, Japan Playing Cards etc. and have their reach spread across to states as far as Gujarat, Andhra, Bihar as well as UP in addition to Delhi and surrounding areas. Exports too is an area which Vipul personally looks into. They recently invested in a Heidelberg SM 74, 4 colour press. “The speed and quality of the Heidelberg SM 74 were the only two major reasons for us to opt for this beauty of a machine” beams Mr.Vipul. “In 1983 we added our first offset machine, an Adast Dominat 19”x26” which helped us to increase the quality as well as print production speed” he added. Vipul joined the business in 1994 and back then their market was restricted only in and around Delhi. Gradually he was instrumental

14

December 2018

in spreading their market to other parts of the country as well. Unlike printers who have to run their machines 24 hours inorder to meet the RoI, Vipul finds his in a 8 hour shift and still meeting his production targets, thanks to his new Heidelberg press. “Since what we print is our own product, we are able to achieve the RoI in our own way and so we do not need to run the machines for more hours, neither do I intend to - considering the market demand and our limited market presence” Vipul adds. Chandni Industries, in addition to the newly added Heidelberg equipment do also operate in their unit, a few old machines like Bestec and Akiyama as well as a few 2 colour Heidelbergs. Along with this is the need for special coating machines from Autoprint (Coimbatore), Alpana Varnish (Delhi) as well as APL machinery (Faridabad). Playing Card industry requires special die cutting machines which are pneumatic based for pressure die cutting of round cornered playing cards. “I have two high end Chinese machines for the pneumatic cutting of our cards which increases our production as well as gives consistent quality”. chips in Vipul. Being a specialised industry, Playing cards

production needs specialised machines to make ends meet. The printed sheets are first scored on a rotary cutting both horizontally as well as vertically and then stripped on the go to get the straight cornered cards ready which then is passed through the pneumatic die cutter to get the perfectly round corner cut product out for packing. With a production need of about 150000 sheets per day, half the need is fulfilled by the new Heidelberg machine. Chandni Industries today has a turnover of about 21 crores per year. The Speedmaster SM74-4 is equipped with automation features like ‘Auto Plate’ that ensure quicker plate changes, cutting down make-ready and setup times notably vs. other presses. A highly automated feeder with central suction tape handles a wide array of print substrates, from thin paper to board, ranging in thickness from 0.03 mm to 0.6 mm. High production speeds of up to 15,000 sheets per hour can be achieved with the Speedmaster SM 74-4.

Classic Colours offers waterless offset inks Long-term partnership with Toray is an important element to success with waterless offset inks. UK-based Classic Colours, a manufacturer of offset inks, has transitioned virtually all of its ink production from conventional oil-based offset inks to more environmentally sound UV-curable waterless offset inks. The company occupies a 5,000 square foot facility operated by eight employees plus the management team. The company produces about 70 tons of ink annually. “Back in 1989, as my employment with an ink manufacturer was coming to an end, I was approached by a Swedish company representative who arrived with a box of waterless inks from Japan,” explains David Grey, Managing Director. “I was intrigued by the idea and suggested to my employer that we conduct a development project. Upon receiving a flat ‘no’ to the request, I decided to start my own business as one of the first ink manufacturers in Europe to provide waterless offset inks. Thus Classic Colours was born!” The Classic Colours relationship with Toray Graphics – the waterless offset plate technology specialist – now in its 28th year, has been an important element in the company’s success with waterless offset inks. Classic Colours also works closely with a number of press manufacturers, including Codimag, a French manufacturer of offset label presses, and KBA, the German manufacturer of Genius and of other UV waterless presses. Classic Colours’ distribution network includes Marks-3zet, also a Toray distributor, and many other companies worldwide.

Why Blockchain matters to the Future of News Publishing WAN-IFRA and Global Alliance for Media Innovation bring new report highlighting where blockchain stands in news publishing and where it might be heading. Blockchains are often spoken about as the solution to problems in nearly every industry. There is something alluring about a technology that seems easy to set up, does not require a leader or central controller, and which can store anything permanently. But would it work for the news media? This new report by WAN-IFRA published with the support of its Global Alliance for Media Innovation highlights many of the main areas where blockchain stands in news publishing and where it might be heading. “The promises of blockchain are seriously challenging industries based on intermediation, trusted third-party distribution, and transactional models. For news professionals, this means that the radically disruptive nature of blockchains needs a serious exploration of challenges, implications and opportunities. We hope this report will help our members and partners to better distinguish between the hype reminiscent of the Internet bubble - and the true potential” said Vincent Peyregne, CEO WAN-IFRA. There appears to be widespread agreement that blockchain is well-suited to intellectual property protection. The key is the technology’s capability to indisputably record and display the origin and time of publication – and any republication – of any kind of content. In news publishing, the Associated Press is working with Civil to develop a means of tracking all transactions and allow the AP to enforce its licensing rights. Startups such as Katalysis are using blockchain to help publishers ensure they are compensated for republication of their content. Both cases are featured in the report. Similarly, the accountability and transparency of publishing via blockchain are seen as powerful tools in the campaign to re-establish trust with readers, especially against the background of the garbage masquerading as news content that has overrun the web. Blockchain is also seen as having potential to help publishers materialise their plan to

16

December 2018

implement micropayments solutions. In fact, “tokenisation” – the (nearly) friction-free exchange of value enabled by blockchain – means news consumers can, in theory, earn credit by contributing anything from constructive comments to fact-checking to viewing ad content. Many blockchain-based publishing platforms aim to enable individual content creators and freelancers to profit from their creative efforts. This disintermediation is a development that established publishers might want to keep their eyes on.

What about advertising? The second part of the report describes some of the implications of blockchain in the advertising business, especially classified and programmatic. Taken to its logical conclusion, blockchain’s emphasis on accountability means more than indelibly attaching the name of a person to a piece of online content; it can mean establishing the identity of that person beyond doubt. The implications are far-reaching. Blockchain can be used to restore trust to the often-rocky relationship among advertisers, publishers, and users, contend Guillaume Vasse of Sud Ouest newspaper in France and Christophe Camborde of its technology partner, inBlocks. Their starting point is storing users’ consent agreements under

GDPR, which they see as a springboard to larger projects. Case studies in the report include Civil, Sludge, Publiq, Katalysis, and inBlocks/Sud Ouest. The report also includes some advice from a blockchain publishing expert on how to get started. WAN-IFRA members: Employees of WANIFRA member organisations can download the report free of charge as a membership benefit and non-members can purchase the report.

Indian press manufacturers relying on Q.I. Press Controls for automation Indian press manufacturers Ronald Web Offset and Prakash Offset choose QIPC for measuring and control equipment on their presses. When a printing company invests in another press, the degree of automation is one of the most important components to take into account. Indian press manufacturers Ronald Web Offset and Prakash Offset supply state-of-the-art machines, tailored to each printing company. Both are currently building up a number of new presses, to be used in several countries. For the measuring and control equipment on the presses, they count on another innovative company: Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC) from the Netherlands.

manufacturers and end users of the press want to get maximum performance from the machines. “Besides the fact that Ronald Web Offset or Prakash Offset like to equip their presses with our systems, end users often ask for it themselves. They are satisfied with the performance of our systems and the support we also offer.”

for colour register (2 cameras on 1 tower) on a Ronald semi-commercial newspaper press and the same system of 2 cameras on 1 tower on a similar press. The optics are automatically cleaned thanks to AIMS. Director Aditya Gupta: “The press can save on lost copies thanks to QIPC’s colour register control and the print quality will be more consistent.”

Consistent print quality For Ronald Web Offset, QIPC supplies the automation of one press that will be built in Sri Lanka. It concerns anmRC-3D system

In the past, Q.I. Press Controls already equipped several Ronald and Prakash presses with their internationally reputed measuring and control equipment. The partnership with both press manufacturers goes back many years. “We offer a total solution to press manufacturers and press users,” explains Rakesh Dave, managing director of QIPC-EAE India. “For them, this is a part they don’t really have to take into account. We solve it for them. Both press

More efficient deployment of personnel Prakash Web Offset has three projects in Bangladesh where it uses the systems of QIPC. Each project consists of an mRC-3D colour register (2 cameras on 1 tower) on a Prakash semi-commercial press. Prakash Director Saurabh Gupta: “Our experience is that QIPC’s systems save paper and improve the consistency of the print quality. But another important reason for us to work with QIPC is the ability of printers to use their staff more efficiently thanks to, among other things, the mRC-3D system.

Science in the Newsroom 2019 A new report from the World Editors Forum. but also very specific off-shoots that impact directly on their ability to work to the highest of standards.

This new report by the World Editors Forum, WAN-IFRA, and Fergus Bell unpacks the challenge and offers some solutions to improve newsroom practices and processes around health, science and consumer affairs reporting in 2019. The scale and depth of disinformation circulating in our societies is a deep concern, not just for the news industry, but for all those who believe that to function effectively, people need accurate, verified information. Emerging technologies, trust in the industry and bad actors spreading both mis- and disinformation are challenges that all journalists will face in 2019. The World Editors Forum, the network for editors within the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), is focused on addressing this information disorder by strengthening professional journalism. Its focus extends beyond political disinformation to the specialist subjects which impact the lives of those in our societies. It stretches to the type of information which informs how we choose to live our lives. In standard newsroom terms, this is what is reported around science, health and consumer affairs. Specialist reporters in the fields of science and consumer affairs have to contend with the broad issues facing all of their peers,

18

December 2018

Niche reporters face an overwhelming volume of scientific data and papers but also unsubstantiated opinion and an evergrowing battalion of “influencers”. In facing the same challenges as their peers, niche reporters have a lot that can be learned from both colleagues and the wider journalism community. These might be new storytelling techniques, new ways to visualise data or publishing methods that stop misinformation campaigns in their tracks. Journalists are used to developing sources, but niche reporters in the field of science and areas such as consumer affairs must develop trusting relationships with entire institutions or scientific communities – all within a sector that has a need to publicise its work but

little knowledge of the process that must be carried out to do so. The World Editors Forum has initiated a Science in the Newsroom project to identify points of pain faced by newsrooms in covering these issues accurately and to come up with solutions that will help strengthen the quality of reporting. Using co-design methodology, we were able to fully map out existing processes in the reporting of science and consumer affairs stories. This then allowed us to identify both the challenges and opportunities for improvement in these fields. By publishing this design process, it is hoped that reporters might benefit from the expert discussions and perhaps build on their own initiatives to make significant developments, improvements, and progress in this space.

Bobst reveals future key focuses Bobst Group reflects on a transformative 2018 and reveals its key focuses for the year ahead.

A noticeable trend throughout 2018 was the consistent feedback from Bobst Group’s clients that the role of packaging is changing. While protecting the goods is still the number one priority, it needs to be done in a more sustainable way. There is also greater demand to process thinner materials and to propose digitalized machines. With the rapid expansion of e-commerce, Bobst’s customers’ packaging production requires more productive and more flexible machines without compromising on quality. As brand owners use packaging to stand out on the shelf and to appeal to customers, the demand for better colour control, shorter production runs and repeat orders is growing, putting more pressure on converters to automate packaging production.

introduced SPEEDWAVE 2 was also very successful, as customers recognized its ability to enable higher productivity levels. The new PREMIUM GAP CONTROL system on FFG – recipient of the FEFCO 2017 Gold Award for Best Innovation – is receiving fantastic customer feedback as an enabler of optimal productivity. E-commerce was a key word in 2018 and the specialty folder gluer MASTERFOLD 230, with GYROBOX XL, has been a major success enabling fast running speeds, fully automatic setting and extreme configurability. For converters aiming for zero-fault packaging production, the recently launched ACCUCHECK 2 and NOVACUT 106 ER 3.0 and SAMPLING device gained significant interest.

Sheet-fed business unit

As Bobst Group reaches the end of 2018, it takes a short look back at the year and some of the major trends and customer feedback on its product portfolio and look forward to their expectations for the year ahead.

Key Notes : > Role of packaging is changing. > New MASTERFLUTE Touch a great success; EXPERTFOLD 50-110 a best seller in 2018. > RS 5002’s optimized price/performance ratio in flexible packaging fulfills demand from emerging markets.

24

December 2018

In 2018, Bobst’s sheet-fed business unit continued to benefit from leading innovations. The new MASTERFLUTE Touch inline laminators – with one single interface to pilot the whole machine delivering the highest productivity – have been a great success. The NOVACUT 106 ER and EXPERTCUT 106 PER remained in high demand as recognized heavyweights in the industry, delivering leading quality and optimal price performance. These have been a perfect fit for converters who are seeking to industrialize production. The EXPERTFOLD 50-110 has been a best seller in 2018, particularly within the pharmaceuticals and cosmetic sectors. The recently

From a printing standpoint, BOBST, with a series of industry supplier partners, has delivered a quantum leap in the flexo print process with the THQ FlexoCloud, helping corrugated box manufacturers achieve some exceptional results, not only in print quality, but security print as well. For 2019, the Sheet-fed business unit expects zero-fault packaging to become mandatory and a continuous growth of e-commerce packaging. The demand for an extended colour gamut and high quality printing for corrugated boards will further accelerate. Finally, the pressure from brand owners to

pressideas/ plc

reduce non-recyclable packaging will grow.

Web-fed business unit In 2018, the Web-fed business unit of Bobst Group continued with significant success in gravure printing, especially the RS 6003. This machine is associated with excellent performance and flexibility to adapt to multiple applications and product configurations, covering a wide range of customer needs. The RS 5002, because of its optimized price/performance ratio in the flexible packaging applications, fulfilled demand from emerging markets. Bobst opened new facilities in China in 2018, answering the growing demand for packaging production in the region. CI flexo printing made a major step forward in 2018 launching the new 20SEVEN CI flexo press featuring new technologies for further enhanced process consistency. The 20SEVEN is a spot-on solution for the ECG printing process. Demand has continued to grow for substrate processing, and the K5 EXPERT is one of the best sellers in this area due to its many unique innovations, including the 700mm diameter coating drum. The K5 VISION has been selling well for the converter market due to its flexibility in handling a variety of substrates. It is also important to mention that brand owners are increasingly moving to recyclable film, creating growing demand for AluBond® and AIOx. The popularity of AluBond is due to its adhesion properties and its enhanced barrier properties on BOPP and CPP films. In terms of lamination, the CL 850 is the best seller, because of the quality of the performances of this machine when combining it with the Flexo BOBST trolley.

Looking ahead to 2019, the Web-fed business unit will focus on strong growth in gravure in Europe and Asia. Labels production will continue to evolve driven by the digitalization of the entire production process, including in-line colour control. In Asia, we expect significant transition from gravure into flexo, especially in fast-growing markets like India and South East Asia.

Services business units While the machines are always of great interest, the BOBST business unit for services had a great year as well, as customers increasingly emphasize the need for value-adding services. The new Digital Inspection Table – a digitalized way to proof printed sheets and die-cut blanks – is a product that all printers and converters should consider. It streamlines the process, improves precision and reduces errors, saving time and costs.

The opening of the new Distribution Center for spare parts in Indianapolis, US, and the hiring of 100 new Field Service Technicians across the globe, will further increase the service level for Bobst customers. In 2019, services will play a growing role for converters and printers. They will witness an increase of connected services to support improved productivity, higher machine availability and higher production quality. Within services, tooling is a new way to improve machine performance with the certification of diemakers. The program will gain importance and make packaging production more efficient. Finally, the development of the portfolio of expert services and consultancy will be built towards a Process Optimization program, which is required in a changing world where automation and process optimizations are key priorities.

For printing, BOBST labels and flexible packaging solutions had a great presence at international shows such as Labelexpo Americas. The M5 was the best seller because of its flexibility and great variety of materials. Its on-boarded automation has also been widely praised. The REVO technology, which enabled the digital control of labels and packaging production, is poised for major growth as it combines key brand requirements – high quality control and high productivity, combined with the ability to manage short runs and low operation costs.

Mouvent – BOBST digital printing In 2018, Mouvent – the competence center for digital printing for Bobst Group – stabilized and industrialized its core cluster technology. The beta installations for textile and label printing took place and the number of installed textile machines reached six units. The first customer installations of Mouvent label machines also took place. Bobst believes this is the start of a fundamental change in the industry in terms of how labels are produces in a fast changing world, where on-demand and customization are daily requirements Development on further products has advanced well and additional products are about to be launched next year, which will

widen the product portfolio of packaging solutions.

And tomorrow…? Digitalize, automate, connect BOBST will continue with its “Leading Innovation” focus. In 2019, the demand for more flexibility in the supply chain and shorter turnaround times will continue to put pressure on printers and converters. The need for consistently high quality printing, not only within a batch, but across multiple reprints, will be higher on the agenda. Stronger regulations in areas of consumer safety, waste disposal, nutrition facts and many others will have a significant impact on the packaging industries. Ink formulation will accelerate its move towards water-based

inks, especially for packaging production. Finally, BOBST is dedicated to collaborating with brand owners and developing joint solutions with producers, developing and leading the packaging evolution and “shaping the future of packaging” together.

Siegwerk announces price increase of packaging inks and varnishes in EMEA Siegwerk will increase prices for all packaging inks and varnishes in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) starting February 1, 2019. Siegwerk, one of the leading international suppliers of printing inks for packaging applications and labels, will implement a price increase for all packaging inks and varnishes in EMEA with effect from February 1, 2019. The costs for raw material categories, such as photoinitiators, UV monomers, acrylic resins, pigments, isocyanates and specialty additives have continued to rise throughout the year, with further increases experienced in Q42018. In addition coloured pigments and photoinitiators are expected to remain highly affected by drastic supply disruptions amid stricter environmental regulations in key supply markets. In addition, the entire European supply chain remains exposed to substantially increasing energy costs and freight rates soaring on rising tolls, inflated fuel surcharges and infrastructure bottlenecks. Siegwerk has already worked closely with the overall supply chain to leverage its buying power and minimize costs whenever possible. “In order to ensure that customers benefit from continued high levels of quality, service and consistency, Siegwerk now needs to pass on these higher costs,” says Dr. Jan Breitkopf, President Packaging EMEA. Despite the company’s best efforts to

reduce costs, there is a clear indication that prices will both start and remain at noticeably higher levels through 2019. Specific increases and segments affected will be duly communicated individually to customers by the company. Siegwerk is one of the leading international manufacturers of printing inks and individual solutions for packaging, labels, and catalogs.

With more than 180 years of experience, the company has solid expertise in and knowledge of many printing procedures. A global manufacturing and service network ensures customers consistently highquality products and services. GDP Annual Growth Rate in Uzbekistan averaged 7.72 percent from 2006 until 2018.Uzbekistan is predicted to be one of the fastest-growing economies in the world (top 26) in future decades, according to a survey. Thanks to the comprehensive assistance and support of the private sector, the business climate in the country is constantly improving, and freedom of entrepreneurship is being strengthened. All this was reflected in the increase in the number of new small enterprises and their specialization. It is no secret that in the early years of independence, small business began with trade, and today business people are increasingly showing an interest in creating small manufacturing enterprises that are actively developing innovative technologies, manufacturing export-oriented and importsubstituting products. Entrepreneurs of Uzbekistan are increasingly active in foreign markets, supplying high-quality textile, leather and footwear products, furniture and much more.

Four sectors of the country were identified for consideration: employment, enterprises, exports, and energy and resource efficiency. It was noted that diagnostics of the private sector in the country allows identifying opportunities to increase the contribution of the private sector to the country’s sustainable economic growth, as well as highlight some barriers hindering the development of the private sector. Moreover, Uzbekistan supports the development of comprehensive and mutually beneficial relations with the countries of South Asia, in particular, with India, etc, in trade and economy, transport, communication, tourism and other spheres. The latest 106 is 6th Rapida for Hubei Guangcai Chinese packaging company orders sixth Rapida – the latest comes with nine inking units and coater.

Hubei Guangcai Printing recently ordered a ninecolour Rapida 106 with coater and kit for UV mixed operation from Koenig & Bauer. It will be delivered to the company in Guangshui in the central Chinese province of Hubei in January and will go into operation in April. The press will mainly be used for the production of folding carton and cigarette packaging. Hubei Guangcai has been using Koenig & Bauer technology since 1997. Haifeng Xing, general manager of Hubei Guangcai explains: “In 1997 we actively expanded our operations in the field of cigarette packaging production. At that time it was imperative to import a state-of-the-art sheetfed offset press. We decided in favour of Koenig & Bauer after comparing and testing the various models on the market and conducting rigorous negotiations with the manufacturers. Koenig & Bauer‘s dynamic team and excellent service won us over. We opted for a fivecolour Rapida 104 with coater. The Rapida 104 was the most popular press in Central China at the time.”

Two sites, six Rapida presses A high-end Rapida 106 with UV mixed operation joins two sheetfed offset presses at the site, a seven-colour Rapida 105 coater press and a six-colour Rapida 105 coater press (both with UV curing).

Key Notes : > Company has operated Koenig & Bauer sheetfed offset technology since 1997. > Extensive process Automation. > Like its predecessors, the nine-colour Rapida 106 is tailored precisely to Hubei Guangcai’s needs.

Hubei Huawen is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hubei Guangcai and the two companies have jointly purchased six Rapida sheetfed offset presses since the start of their cooperation with Koenig & Bauer. Hubei Guangcai has developed rapidly with its new technology. General manager Haifeng Xing remembers: “Our investment in Koenig & Bauer presses not only has increased production capacity, but has also driven technological innovation within

our company. In line with market requirements, we have developed and introduced new technologies to protect our packaging against counterfeiting, e.g. by using special inks that react thermally or effect coatings that are difficult to copy. Our Rapida presses have allowed us to expand our cigarette packaging business.” The new Hubei Guangcai plant built in 2014 alone covers an area of more than 120 hectares. A highend Rapida 106 with UV mixed operation joins two sheetfed offset presses at the site, a seven-colour Rapida 105 coater press and a six-colour Rapida 105 coater press (both with UV curing). The plant generates sales of around 260 million CNY (approx. Đ33m) annually. Like its predecessors, the nine-colour Rapida 106 is tailored precisely to Hubei Guangcai’s needs for sustainable packaging production. Provisions have also been made for the future addition of a cold-foil module.

High efficiency through comprehensive process automation The company intends to implement energy savings and improve its green credentials with more costeffective cold-foil processes and the development of new finishing technologies. These measures, plus streamlining production, are essential for Hubei Guangcai to counter rising labour costs. Rapida presses offer every opportunity to boost production efficiency through comprehensive process automation.

Amcor’s new Bharuch plant starts operation Amcor opens new home care packaging site dedicated to Unilever products in India. Growing demand for Unilever’s laundry products in India has created a need for quality packaging, which Amcor will satisfy with a new manufacturing plant dedicated to the needs of the global consumer-goods giant. Amcor’s efficient new factory in Bharuch, Gujarat, in the Western region of India started operations this week after an official ceremonial event in October with executives from both companies. As part of a seven-year agreement with Unilever signed in 2017, Amcor made a substantial investment to build and equip the state-of-the-art Bharuch plant. “Across all home-care categories, consumers in India are choosing products with packaging that provide them with the most convenience,” said Michael Zacka, president of Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific, who attended the ceremony. Mr Zacka said the site brings new-technology flexographic printing to the India market, and will be “a centre of excellence for product development and sustainable packaging solutions.” The new plant is producing packaging for Unilever that will meet the rapidly evolving expectations of the company and the

consumers who buy its products. The 8,000-square-metre plant has three lines that will run 24 hours a day, producing flexible packaging using advanced flexographic technology. From initial employment of 50 people, Amcor anticipates the team in Bharuch to grow to 180 by December 2019. Mr. Zacka said customers, suppliers and Amcor people should see the investment as evidence of his company’s “strong belief in India’s tremendous present and future, and the huge opportunity for Amcor and all our stakeholders.” After cutting a ceremonial ribbon, Henk Sijbring, Vice President, Packaging Procurement, Unilever, described the site opening as a major milestone in the global partnership between Unilever and Amcor. “This is the culmination of several years of strong collaboration and business growth between Unilever and Amcor,” said Mr. Sjibring. “The hub model, and the innovative ways of working it enables, is the first of its kind in packaging for Unilever and represents another significant commitment in this longterm partnership. The hub will enhance the capabilities of both companies to further delight consumers with market leading sustainable and innovative packaging solutions,” said Mr. Sijbring.

Unilever and Amcor have both committed to make all their packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, to increasing the use of recycled content in plastic packaging, and to working with others to drive up recycling rates around the world. The Bharuch plant is one example of Amcor’s broad, global environmental program, which sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy and water use for the company’s 200 locations around the world. The local Amcor team intends to have the site certified for sending zero waste-to-disposal. Amcor employs more than 1,100 people across seven sites in India, who produce high-quality packaging for global, regional and national food and beverages, home and personal care, medical and pharmaceutical businesses across the region. Amcor has 38 sites across eight countries in the Asia Pacific region. Hindustan Unilever, a subsidiary of Unilever, is India’s largest Fast-Moving Consumer Goods company with a heritage of over 80 years in India. With over 35 brands spanning 20 distinct categories such as soaps, detergents, shampoos, skin care, toothpastes, deodorants, cosmetics, tea, coffee, packaged foods, ice cream, and water purifiers, the company is a part of the everyday life of millions of consumers across India.

From SmartLabel to SmartERLabel SGK’S Michael Fox presents “From SmartLabel to SmartERLabel”. Addresses how to engage consumers with smartlabel connected packaging. Michael Fox, director of SGK’s Client Solutions consulting practice, presented From SmartLabel to SmartERLabel in a live webinar on December 13, 2018. The SmartLabel initiative is gaining global notoriety as it increases transparency and helps brands connect better to their customers. Most major U.S. consumer packaged goods (CPGs) are closely monitoring how SmartLabel is received as a transparency platform and as a regulatory disclosure platform, but SmartLabel had even more to offer. It also improved transparency by providing better access to that information via a connected experience – the physical packaging directly linked to the web with a scannable code. In SGK’s BrandSquare webinar From SmartLabel to SmartERLabel, Michael Fox shared key insights and strategies to leverage the benefits of connected pack technology. In this webinar, participants learnt: • The basics of the SmartLabel program • How companies are monitoring transparency engagement and compliance disclosure

Why companies should invest in connected pack technology and consumer experience

“U.S. shoppers demand to know more about the grocery products they are buying than what is available from traditional package labels,” said Fox. “SmartLabel is a major connected pack initiative that gives consumers a way to digitally access more detailed product information than could ever fit on a label about a wide range of food, beverage, household, pet care and over-thecounter products.” Fox concluded: “SmartLabel is intent on solving for this demand and brand owners can help by improving consumer access to this information with a connected experience.” Michael has spent 14 years effecting organizational change in a large range of

business environments, from CPG to military. He has a broad-based technical background in R&D, engineering management, product lifecycle management, project management and operations. Since 2011, Michael has worked with more than 30 of the 100 largest CPGs to evolve their marketing operations practices. Participants learnt how to help their brand provide greater consumer transparency through connected packaging through ‘From SmartLabel to SmartERLabel’. SGK is a global brand development, activation and deployment company that drives brand performance. By creating brands, activating and protecting brands, it helps clients achieve higher brand performance. SGK’s global footprint spans more than 20 countries. SGK is part of Matthews International Corporation.

Protection against fake Christmas presents New security ink from Leibinger makes it more difficult for product pirates to do business. On Christmas day, a bottle of perfume waits under the Christmas tree. But unfortunately, its scent is somewhat off and it causes a skin burn. The product is a fake. To protect distributors and consumers from such nasty surprises, Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG has developed a new security ink. EU-wide product piracy is on the rise. Manufacturers suffer losses of 60 billion euros from product pirating, according to a report by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Moreover, the copies endanger the health of consumers. Cosmetics are a prime example, whereby criminals often mix heavy-metal compounds such as cadmium, nickel, arsenic and lead in the products.

“We want to protect manufacturers and consumers from these serious damages,” explains Christina Leibinger, Managing Owner of Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG, the industrial printer manufacturer from Baden-Württemberg. “That’s why we developed a new security ink that can be quickly and cost-effectively integrated into packaging lines as a tool for more security against product piracy.” The ink is now available.

Security pigments reveal pirated products The new security ink is suitable for use in the JET3up PI – an inkjet printer that codes product packaging made of plastic, cardboard and even glass or tins with information such as best-before dates and batch numbers. At first glance, the ink looks like a classic black ink. But appearance is deceiving. Under a special UV-light, tiny fluorescent pigments begin to glow greenish. If the distributor shines a specific UVflashlight onto the product packaging, he can immediately identify whether the product is an original. If the font remains black, he can immediately remove the pirated product from circulation. “Security ink is designed to identify product

pirates and help hold them accountable, while giving manufacturers a tool to defend themselves against false damage claims and increasing consumer protection,” says Leibinger. “The ink itself is very difficult to copy, since we use security pigments that are not available at every turn.”

A cost-effective alternative to security holograms The security ink is especially economical compared to other counterfeit security measures. “Manufacturers do not require additional machines, just their inkjet printer. Alternatives such as holograms are much more complex by comparison,” explains Leibinger. Another advantage is increased reliability. “The more equipment is involved in the packaging process, the greater the risk of costly production downtime. Our two-inone solution – coding and authentication – increases production reliability and reduces maintenance and investment costs. The somewhat higher costs of the security ink compared to standard black ink are quickly amortized.”

The Xeikon 3300 steals the show at Labelexpo India Visitors learned about the press’s business winning possibilities. The digital front end capabilities of the highly responsive Xeikon 3300 proved to be a real crowd pleaser at Labelexpo India. Stealing the limelight was a roll-2-roll configuration which was sold at the show. Visitors were interested in its digital front-end capabilities and how the responsive and flexible system can cost effectively expand their business production capabilities and door opening opportunities. The entry level narrow web label press excels in productivity and prints at true 1200 dpi. Supporting high quality production for selfadhesive labels and the heat-transfer sector, it is the only digital press with a real prepress workflow and strong colour management functionality to ensure maximum performance with CMYK + White. The

Xeikon Color Control is an industry unique application to enhance make ready features, optimization of the CMYK colour gamut and providing easy to managed introduction of special colour to further enhance the press capabilities. It was shown along with print samples from the recently launched PX3000. The UV inkjet press was developed in response to the growing need for digital label printing technologies that drive new applications and produces them in the most efficient way. Bent Serritslev, Xeikon’s Managing Director APAC, says, “We are committed to delivering leading edge solutions and our significant presence at Labelexpo India underpins that. We were delighted to see so much interest in digital development during the show and that

was reflected by the number of strong leads we received”. “While still focused on ways to cost effectively and flexibly manage short runs, there also seemed to be a growing interest in managing versioning, VDP and brand protection. We had some very insightful conversations and are looking forward to expanding on them long after the show.”

First Gallus Labelfire in Canada The first Labelfire 340 at DCM to enhance performance in running short-run, on-demand labels. Data Communications Management (DCM) of Brampton, Ontario installed the first Labelfire 340 in Canada from HeidelbergGallus to enhance their performance in running short-run, on-demand labels. DCM, one of the leading players in print-ondemand in Canada, has spent the past 50 years focusing on traditional flexographic labels. As one of the largest label manufacturers in Canada, DCM expects that their new Labelfire 340 will take the company to another level with variable printing. According to Alan Roberts, Senior Vice President at DCM, “our clients are looking for shorter runs and more customization on their labels. If we’re going to be a leader in shortrun prime label business, we need the best piece of hybrid technology, and I believe we are going to receive it with the HeidelbergGallus Labelfire 340.” Raising the bar in the label market, the

Labelfire 340 combines the latest digital printing technology with the benefits of conventional printing and further processing technology. The Labelfire prints at 50 m/min, which will help meet DCM’s growing customers’ demands for short runs. The flexo-digital press is a complete in-line solution that handles digital flexo, cold foil, rotary screen, and diecutting from start to finish. “We believe that a hybrid press versus a pure digital press is the right solution that gives us the flexibility to meet customer demands, especially since we are now able to do

everything in-line in one pass,” said Roberts. “With other pure digital technology, you have to take everything off the press and bring it to another piece of equipment, which takes a lot more time and labour. The Labelfire is a more holistic approach that I believe will make us stand out in the marketplace.”

K6 Media helps put smiles on children’s faces with help from Drytac ReTac - Installing several 20ft (6m) adhesive banners across painted bulkheads, applying print-and-cut graphics on stainless steel elevators, creating three wall murals and producing a variety of print-and-cut labels. K6 Media has wrapped up a project for the Salvation Army’s Toy Mountain campaign in Ottawa, Canada, with banners, murals and labels printed onto Drytac ReTac Smooth 150. The Toy Mountain project distributes toys to families throughout the Christmas period, putting smiles on the faces of tens of thousands of children. Property company Morguard donated the use of a business suite in the Canadian capital for the duration of the toy drive, which received a colourful makeover by K6 Media. A full-service wide-format printing provider with 15 years’ experience and a knowledgeable team including in-house designers, a print production department and a team of installers, K6 Media was ideally suited to deliver the project. This involved installing several 20ft (6m) adhesive banners across painted bulkheads, applying printand-cut graphics on stainless steel elevators, creating three wall murals measuring approximately 20ft x 9ft (6m x 2.7m) and producing a variety of print-and-cut labels for the donations room to help sort the toys efficiently. “For this project, we chose to use Drytac ReTac Smooth 150, a matte 6 mil film,” explains Juan Runnells, Production Manager at K6 Media. “As this project is a temporary installation in suites donated to the Salvation Army, the removability of the film was very important - a feature delivered by ReTac. “Also, ReTac’s 6 mil thickness allowed us to print quickly on our HP Latex 570 printers and not have to take the additional time to laminate the film, yet still have a printed graphic that was easy to install. ReTac also works extremely well as a print-and-cut material for the same reasons.” Drytac ReTac Smooth 150 6 mil (150μ) white polymeric printable PVC is designed to be easy to install, to reposition and to remove thanks to its innovative self-adhesive technology. As well as excellent compatibility with latex ink technology, it can be used with

eco-solvent, solvent and UV printers. For these reasons, Juan Runnells says that it ‘is always on hand in our production area’. He says: “We predominately use ReTac Smooth 150 for short-term wall graphics and have also found it to work extremely well for short-term window murals. We have one client that requires us to install window murals throughout the year – spring, summer, winter and fall – and have found that ReTac works very well in many weather conditions, and specifically that it is easily removable even during the cold winter months.” K6 Media frequently chooses other Drytac products, including Drytac SpotOn white matte PVC film for temporary wall and window projects for the Canadian coffee shop chain Tim Hortons, and Drytac Interlam Pro Emerytex UV laminate film to create information panels for animal rescue organization Little Ray’s Nature Centres.

Drytac is one of the leading international manufacturers of self-adhesive materials for the large format print and signage markets. Its key product areas include window, wall and floor graphic media, laminating films and mounting adhesives, high-performance tapes, industrial adhesives and durable labels.
