Kai Huse, Technical Manager, Product Area Lithography, at Hydro

Toray Graphics, manufacturer of waterless offset plate technology, has partnered with global aluminium producer – Hydro Aluminum Rolled Products. The partnership results in high quality aluminum coil rolls for manufacture of Toray waterless offset plates in its Czech facility. The two companies connected at drupa 2012 when Toray was seeking a second source of aluminum, and after a due diligence process, Hydro was selected. “When we first connected with Toray, we didn’t have much experience with waterless offset plates,” said Kai Huse, Technical Manager, Product Area Lithography, at Hydro. “We had been producing rolled aluminum coils for almost everyone in the traditional offset plate business. We realized

additional visual inspection step at the end of the manufacturing process. “We already had both visual and automated quality control processes in place,” Huse stated. “But the extra visual inspection of every coil at the end of the manufacturing line ensured that we met Toray’s stringent quality requirements. Working with Toray has been a great experience, and I am sure we could learn a lot from each other.

Partnership-based relationship driving innovations Online print shop SAXOPRINT investing in new large-format press from Heidelberg. The online print shop SAXOPRINT based in Dresden has recorded double-digit sales growth in recent years, and last year generated sales of over EUR 100 million in the area of commercial online printing as part of the CEWE Group. Its product range has undergone a significant change in this time. Standard commercial printed matter such as flyers, posters, catalogues, and brochures are still the main focus and account for 80 percent of its business, however packaging and finishing represent a large growth market. “Our business model is based on cost leadership,” explains Managing Director Klaus Sauer. “We use special algorithms to bundle the orders received via the web shop into gang runs and distribute them to the respective machines.

The latest installation in the press room comes in at an impressive fifty meters: a Speedmaster XL 162 eight-colour perfecting press with the world’s first CutStar roll sheeter in this format on a machine of Heidelberg.

“With us, every order is individual. As well as a good price, delivery reliability and speed are important,” confirms Sauer. Customers from all over Europe order from SAXOPRINT, whether private individuals, business customers, agencies, or resellers, who now account for a not insignificant share. International customers are looked after by a call center in London staffed with native speakers. According to SAXOPRINT; the answer quota, in other words how quickly telephone calls are answered, is 98 percent, and the repeat order rate is over 80 percent. High efficiency and speed are important here. Up to 5,000 orders are produced daily in three shifts. This is only possible using industrialized processes and

the most modern equipment. With this in mind, the company has invested over EUR 70 million in new solutions in the past seven years. The latest installation in the press room comes in at an impressive fifty meters: a Speedmaster XL 162 eight-colour perfecting press with the world’s first CutStar roll sheeter in this format on a machine of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). CutStar in other formats, such as 50 x 70 or 70 x 100, has been available from Heidelberg for many years. This means that the full flexibility to use sheets or roll-fed stock is now available in 7B format. More than anything, this significantly reduces the makeready times. This means that SAXOPRINT now has eight printing presses with a total of 36 printing units from Heidelberg: five large-format Speedmaster XL 162 presses, one Speedmaster XL 145, and two Speedmaster XL 106 presses, both of which are equipped with the CutStar roll sheeter. “We saw the benefits and so entered into negotiations with Heidelberg at drupa 2016 to include CutStar in the next large-format press,” recalls Sauer.

Partnership-based relationship pays off – double the efficiency The experts from Heidelberg and BW Papersystems Stuttgart GmbH spent two years working on the development of CutStar. The Speedmaster XL 162 with CutStar has been in use since January of this year, and Klaus Sauer is more impressed than ever:

Key Notes : > SAXOPRINT’s press room is now home to six large-format presses as well as two Speedmaster XL 106 presses. > Heidelberg increasing its share of the growing online printing market. > New Speedmaster XL 162 with world’s first CutStar roll sheeter in this format nearly doubles efficiency at SAXOPRINT.

12

March 2019

Klaus Sauer, Managing Director of SAXOPRINT, is very satisfied with the CutStar for the Speedmaster XL 162. This means that for the first time, the full flexibility to use sheets or roll-fed stock is available in 7B format.

pressideas/ commercial printing

“Once again, our partnership with Heidelberg has paid off, and the project was handled with the utmost professionalism by all sides.” Our experiences so far with CutStar speak for themselves: With just one reel change, the same number of sheets is fed as with three to four paper pallets. Fewer makeready and stoppage times as well as uninterrupted operating stability make the new Speedmaster XL 162 at SAXOPRINT nearly twice as efficient. The cutting performance of CutStar has a tolerance of less than 0.3 millimeters, well above that of industrially produced paper stacks. This means that the cut sheets in the delivery can go straight into postpress. The previous step of vibrating against straight edges is no longer necessary. Another plus is the double-gripper technology in the press delivery. The controlled guide at the front and rear edge guides the sheet reliably from the last printing unit to the delivery pile. These innovations mean that the previously required sheet brakes and therefore the print-free corridors are a thing of the past. The best possible use can be made of the print area. This means that a dozen different jobs or 400 different business cards can be printed on a single sheet of paper with a width of 160 centimeters. “We have succeeded in compensating the ten percent increase in the price of paper through innovations and increased efficiency. This is all the more significant since paper accounts for up to 30 percent of our costs,” reports Klaus Sauer happily. In addition, paper on rolls is around six percent cheaper than paper sheets. “In Heidelberg I have a partner that I can trust and that delivers on our wishes. The development of CutStar is a really great achievement,” says a satisfied Sauer. The cooperation is continuing – a three-year integration project is currently underway that should culminate in autonomous printing with the Prinect workflow.

Packagings are a strong growth segment at the online print shop SAXOPRINT.

leading photo service provider is thus focusing on the strengths of offset printing in addition to its digital printing with a focus on photo books. Today, SAXOPRINT employs 550 people at its site in Dresden and last year received an award for excellence in apprenticeship from the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Every year it trains 20 young people. “More than anything we need skilled workers who can put our multimillion investment in machinery to efficient use,” says Klaus Sauer in explaining the company’s commitment to apprenticeships. As a commitment to the location, CEWE purchased the entire company premises of over 70,000 square meters in Dresden last year. Half is occupied by SAXOPRINT, the other half is rented to companies. With this investment, further growth at the Dresden location will be easily possible. The full-service print shop is no stranger to superlatives: every year it processes over 25,000 metric tons of paper and images 1.2 million square meters of printing plates, 700,000 square meters of which were produced without chemicals and water in 2018. The prepress area is home to a new large-format Suprasetter, while the postpress area boasts an entire phalanx of Stahlfolder

machines, which prepare the high output from the printing presses for the saddle stitchers and perfect binders. Following the installation of the new Speedmaster XL 162, the last of the rival machines will be removed this year. “What I like about the Heidelberg machines, apart from the high level of automation and ease of use, is the high technical availability. The makeready times on the Speedmaster XL 106 are consistently under two minutes,” explains Klaus Sauer. Paper waste is 20 to 40 sheets, which contributes to the green production credentials. According to Sauer, CO2 emissions have decreased dramatically in recent years. Over 10 percent of customers also order climate-neutral printed products. The business field is presently being extended with packaging such as the SAXOPRINT® easy box. With this innovative product solution, a wide variety of packaging types can be conveniently customized online in freely selectable formats in a 3D designer, and ordered in runs of one and up. The target group is anyone who wants to enhance their product by giving it a customized packaging – regardless of the size of run and at attractive prices. “There is a harsh wind blowing, but our business is going well and we know the adjustments we need to make to be successful in the long term,” confirms Sauer.

Online printing business model growing - expansion of the packaging offering SAXOPRINT was established in 1999 with 22 employees. The online print shop “meindruckportal.de” was launched in 2006. The first Heidelberg press was installed in 2011, replacing rival presses. SAXOPRINT has been part of CEWE Stiftung & Co. KGaA based in Oldenburg since 2012. Europe’s The business model of the online print shop SAXOPRINT is based on bundling orders into so-called gang runs. Everything is checked on the Prinect Press Center of the Speedmaster XL 162.

International Standard provides a new Colour Management System ISO 20677 addresses new requirements of emerging new potential applications and tomorrow’s colour communication requiring a more flexible and extensible system. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has announced the completion of the development of ISO 20677, Image technology colour management — Extensions to architecture, profile format, and data structure. The ISO Technical Committee 130, Joint Working Group 7 (TC130/JWG7) that developed this international standard works closely with the International Color Consortium (ICC) on standards focused on colour management. The Association for PRINT Technologies (APTech) administers TC130 JWG7 and coordinates the activities of the U.S.-based representatives that are members of this group. In addition, APTech acts as Secretariat for the ICC, the acknowledged leader in colour management. While the current architecture has worked well and meets most user requirements, new potential applications are emerging, and tomorrow’s colour communication requires a more flexible and extensible system. ISO 20677 addresses these new requirements . This international standard describes an expanded profile specification, with profile connections that permit greater flexibility and functionality. Central to the new architecture is a move from a fixed profile connection space based on D50 colorimetry, towards a much more flexible PCS definition, including support for any illuminant, any colorimetric observer and any number of PCS channels – enabling both spectral and multiplex PCS connections. Additionally, minimum structural and operational requirements for writing and reading ICC profiles are defined. “ICC Color Management systems have been reliable work horses behind colour reproduction systems in the graphic arts,” says Dr. Max Derhak, ICC Co-Chair, Chair of the ICC Architecture Working Group and Principal Color Scientist at Onyx Graphics. “As a colour technologies developer, I realized long ago that there are limitations to what can be done with ICC color profiles. Therefore, I have endeavoured to provide

14

March 2019

leadership in pioneering new approaches and technologies that have become part of iccMAX.” Value added through using ISO 20677 within business process resides in functionality, connectivity, and computational efficiency. A wide range of functionality can be implemented through the much richer set of processing elements and connection spaces. The framework for implementation is provided license-free in an open-source reference implementation (RefIccMax), significantly reducing the cost of implementing the new transform functionality. The ability to convert between binary and XML representations of the profile, and to call text data files at profile creation time, also simplifies the profile-generation process. A further enhancement is the ability to provide run-time input to a transform using environment variables. Using these features, end users will be able to perform a range of tasks that were not previously possible without specialist or custom software. “Display technology has been evolved and emerging at a very fast pace during the last couple of years, and the trend will continue to go on,” says Chris Bai, Vice Chair of the ICC Display Working Group, and Senior Color Expert at BenQ Corporation. “OLED, Quantum Dots and Laser Displays are widely available now, but people also see all sorts of colour issues due to the narrow bandwidth. Fortunately, with the publication of ISO 20677, as known as iccMAX, colour technologists can now have a better way to tackle the colour reproduction problem. As a professional display company, we are very glad to see its coming and we are willing to adopt the latest ISO Standard.” ISO 20677 preserves the core ICC concept of a well-defined connection space for profiles, while simultaneously supporting connection to compatible iccMAX profiles using highly flexible connection spaces, and legacy v2 and v2 ICC profiles. Developers can focus their effort on the specific element of the workflow that adds value to their product, without the need to build a

complete transform pipeline from original to preview and output. End users will see a more seamless connection between different elements of their workflow, especially where those elements require processing not supported in ICC v4. The use of functionally encoded transforms carries a potential run-time computation cost, though the extended function set provides wider opportunities for optimization. Developers can choose which features to use; those that reduce profile size (e.g., lossless compression of elements, sparse matrices, transforms by reference, enabling local caching of selected transforms) and subsequent costs of network transmission and storage; or features that optimize computational efficiency. Implementors can eliminate the need for large libraries of profiles and the problem of profile selection by providing a single profile for a range of conditions, which is configured at run-time. In addition to the greater flexibility, end users should see an overall reduction in computation time and communication bandwidth as software providers are able to match requirements more directly with a wider range of processing elements. ISO 20677 is available for purchase from APTech and ISO member national organizations.

Primera MC at Groupe Morault Muler Martini technology enables the printing company to boost its saddle stitching productivity by more than 10 percent. With the commissioning of a Primera MC, Groupe Morault, located in Compiègne, France, increased its saddle stitching productivity by more than 10%. The printing company now relies on four Muller Martini systems for print finishing at this one production location alone. The economic environment is forcing companies to make investments to remain competitive. The new machines will also help the family company, which operates in northern France, to optimize processes, time frames and the use of personnel. As a result, printing and print finishing are being developed in parallel at the modern operation in Compiègne, which has two web printing presses and three sheet-fed offset machines.

“We can’t buy first-class printing presses and then leave print finishing to old systems,” says General Director François Morault. The progress in terms of productivity as a result of the Primera MC has specific technical reasons. Motion Control Technology enables fine-tuning on the fly. Synchronization is performed automatically and changeovers are quick. In addition, there is almost no production waste with the new saddle stitcher. “We can operate at full speed with the Primera MC,” says François Morault. The 14,000 cycles per hour are not an ideal scenario, but rather a reality, which is important to the printing company in Compiègne, with its 100 employees. This is because at Groupe Morault, they produce

the highest-volume runs. This mainly involves jobs in A4 size – often for publishers of special-interest magazines and customers in the public sector. With its pre-press, printing, print finishing, distribution and delivery services, Groupe Morault acts as a one-stop shop for its customers, which are mainly based in the greater Paris area.

Eluding the rising cost of silicone By Rob Bosman, Sales Manager at Contiweb

These days, the word ‘silicone’ frequently comes with a sign of exasperation as thoughts turn to how hard the bottom line is going to be as prices for the material continue to rocket. Silicone is a base material used to facilitate the production of everyday items across a vast range of industries including, medical, household electrical and many more. The rising cost of electricity in China, a major global provider, plus the price of crude oil, means silicone suppliers are finding that their profit margins are being squeezed. This, along with increasing pressure to meet growing global demand, has seen the price of silicone soar by over 50%. For print providers, the situation is no different. Silicone is frequently used as a lubricant in the print process, remoistening paper, protecting from friction and ensuring print quality is maintained at a consistently high level. Silicone is an essential part of the process and often accounts for large expense in the business, with large offset lines spending around €100k on silicone a year! Any increase can see material costs

escalate and hit margins hard. A number of forward-thinking print providers are seeking alternative solutions to safeguard their businesses. Answers come in various forms including the integration of an all-inone silicone applicator and remoistening system such as the Contiweb Fluid Applicator (CFA). Typically, companies would have two separate devices in each press line – each with a sole purpose, one to apply the silicone and one remoisten the substrate. Designed as a standalone system, the CFA combines both functions in one and adds the unique ability to create the mixture directly in the system. This allows print providers to reduce their hardware costs and streamline their workflow. From a consumable perspective, systems like the CFA can unlock huge savings. Conventional systems use a silicone emulsion. This ready-made mixture is often very expensive and can see consumable costs escalate. In contrast, the CFA uses a pure silicone oil. This high-grade raw material ensures that print providers only need to mix a small amount with water and

surfactant before being applied. The oil lasts much longer than an emulsion and provides a more cost-effective solution, as silicone consumption is reduced. In fact, systems like the CFA can see print providers reduce silicone consumption by more than 80% while securing them a financial saving of more than 60%! Beyond cost savings, the use of silicone oil also offers additional quality and workflow advantages. Take for example the lubrication: the silicone oil outputs large drops of oil which are slowly absorbed by the substrate compared to the fine droplets of a silicone emulsion. This means that less oil is required to achieve a good lubrication and further streamlines operational cost. In terms of quality, the oil produces a film on the applicator roller, which drastically reduces the risk of ink picking and ensures a consistent, premium product. As Henry Ford once said, “If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got”. In other words, unless you’re willing to step-out of your comfort zone and think outside the box, you’ll always find yourself restricted by the same bottlenecks.

Collectively, the entries represent game-changing packaging print production processes that embody that transformation of flexo. “I’m regularly asked, ‘What’s next on the agenda for flexo?’” said Chris Payne, President Flexographic Packaging Division, Kodak. “The future is clearly illustrated by the companies that have been honoured with these awards and the great strides they have made in not only demonstrating that flexo is capable of the very highest print quality but that, more importantly they are driving efficient, consistent and sustainable manufacturing processes. We are proud to be their technology partner.” With an impressive overall standard for entries and a judging process that set a high bar for excellence, the panel gave seven Gold Awards and five Silver Awards, with four companies awarded the distinction of highest honours based on a numerical scoring system. No Platinum Awards were given on this occasion, clearly laying down the challenge and setting the goal for future events. Europe, North and South America, and South Asia provided the

Heidelberg and MK Masterwork present Diana Go new folder gluer completes product portfolio for packaging market.

In the middle of March, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) and MK Masterwork (MK) presented the new Diana Go folder gluer for the growing packaging market at an open house event in MK’s European factory in Nové Město, Slovakia. Among the European packaging printers taking part were representatives from the companies that have already signed the first contracts for three serial production machines. The tour of Production and Assembly in Nové Město as well as the presentation of the Diana Go confirmed to the companies once again that their faith in MK and Heidelberg to deliver a machine that lives up to their expectations will be fully satisfied.

The success of the cooperation between Heidelberg and MK Masterwork is founded on the perfect fit between the two companies’ core strengths.

The Diana Go was developed on the basis of Heidelberg’s market requirements by the MK development team in Neuss, Germany, and offers both commercial and packaging printers a costeffective, flexible, and productive entry-level machine with a comparatively small footprint. It can run a wide range of carton styles such as straightline and lockbottom as well as optionally special styles such as envelopes or CD covers. The Diana Go is able to hit a top speed of 250 m/min in a machine just over 9 meters long.

The optionally integrated glue, inspection, and ejector systems ensure high production quality. Designed for customers needing higher productivity and the ability to offer an expanded portfolio of products to their clients, the Diana Go is attractively priced to ensure a high return on investment in a very competitive market. As a result of technology transfer, the Diana Go has many design features present in the highperformance folder gluers of the Diana series to ensure reliable performance and peace of mind.

Constant investment in MK’s Nové Msto site yields new models Coming less than two years after the introduction of the successful Diana Easy, the new Diana Go has now been added to the portfolio of postpress machines. The new model completes the portfolio of folder gluer models developed and produced by MK and sold via Heidelberg. Service is also provided via Heidelberg. The portfolio now includes the Diana Go as a compact entry-level solution, the Diana Easy, a popular general purpose machine with more than 30 machines now sold in 18 months, the Diana Smart , a 450 meter/min workhorse, and the long established peak performance Diana X.

Visitors of the open house event in Nové Město were impressed by the high flexibility and productivity of the Diana Go.

European Coatings Show sets new record World’s leading trade show for the coatings industry larger and more international than ever.

The European Coatings Show set new records once again this year, underscoring its position as the leading show for the international coatings industry: about 30,500 trade visitors (2017: 30,198) from 124 countries (2017: 120) seized the opportunity offered by this year’s event to learn about innovations in paint, coating and sealing compound manufacture from 1,156 exhibitors from 46 countries (2017: 40). The exhibition area, extending to eight halls this year, turned the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg into the central platform for coatings experts from around the world to share ideas and experiences. In addition to the trade show, the overlapping European Coatings Show Conference also proved a drawcard with an even more international presence: about 800 participants came from 54 countries to listen to the presentations by leading scientists and development experts.

In addition to a pavilion for young and innovative companies from Germany, the new Start-up Area was very much the place for newcomers, with nine international exhibitors taking part in the European Coatings Show for the first time.

March 2019

Exhibitors and trade visitors travelled to Nuremberg from six continents to discuss every aspect of the process chain of paint and coatings manufacture. They had more space this year, with eight halls in total. In six of them, including Hall 9 as a new addition, exhibitors displayed raw materials used in paints, printing inks and adhesives, while two more halls were devoted to laboratory and production

technology, and also testing and measurement devices.

Even larger international contingent among both exhibitors and visitors The 2019 European Coatings Show was thus larger, more varied, and even more international than previous events in the series. Most of the exhibitors came from Germany, followed by China, Italy, the Netherlands, USA and India. Products and services from exhibitors based in the Czech Republic and China were exhibited at the pavilions from both of these countries. The proportion of both international exhibitors and international trade visitors was even higher than last time. Visitors at this year’s show represented 124 countries, including the likes of Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and Turkey, which were among the top ten in visitor statistics, and also many other countries in the Asian, North and South American, African and Australian markets.

European Coatings Show illustrated the sector’s power of innovation The attractions of the trade show included the ever-popular product presentations – three stages hosting open exhibitor presentations, in which the exhibitors each had 15 minutes to give a brief talk

pressideas/ plc

about the development and performance of new products. The power of innovation of the sector was also illustrated at the show by a number of research institutes, universities, and many young companies. In addition to a pavilion for young and innovative companies from Germany, the new Start-up Area was very much the place for newcomers, with nine international exhibitors taking part in the European Coatings Show for the first time.

Industry visitors with top experience in the procurement process The first survey results confirm the key role the visitors play in their companies’ procurement decisions: nine out of ten are involved in the decision-making process when it comes to procurements, an even higher figure than last time.

Conference focuses on ecofriendliness and functionality The European Coatings Show Conference once again brought together leading R&D experts and prominent scientists from all around the world. With about 800 delegates from 54 countries taking part, its international attendance was even greater than on the previous occasion. Participants learned about the latest research results and trends in coating development in 144 presentations grouped into 24 sessions. The most popular presentation series included “Water-borne Coatings”, “Dispersing Technology”,

“Microbial Protection” and “Science today – coatings tomorrow”. Eco-friendliness and functionality are thus topics the industry continues to consider particularly important this year – which was also confirmed by the interactive survey of participants during the Conference. The use of titanium dioxide, something that has been the subject of intense discussion, was a new item on the agenda. The European Coatings Award for the best Conference submission went to Professor Markus Antonietti, director colloid chemistry at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. In his keynote presentation, he discussed a new procedure

for obtaining monomers, polymers and solvents from biomass waste. The next European Coatings Show takes place in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 23 May to 25 March 2021.

The Robinette Company partners with Asahi Photoproducts The Robinette Company completely eliminates solvent-based platemaking from its Bristol, Tennessee, plant.

The average time per month it took press operators to get a job in register with solvent plates was 297 minutes, while AWP plates took an average of 151 minutes.

March 2019

Asahi Photoproducts recently reported that flexible film and paper packaging manufacturer and converter The Robinette Company has been able to completely eliminate solvent-based platemaking from its Bristol, Tennessee, plant. The company, which employs 300 and specializes in sustainable packaging for the food, beverage, nutraceutical, construction, textile and health care markets, has been using Asahi AWP-DEW water-washable plates for several years, and is in the process of upgrading to Asahi AWP-DEW plates for even more productivity improvements.

“We have reduced our platemaking process from three hours to one hour for the first plate out, with subsequent plates delivered in 20 minutes,” states Gene Martin, Plant Manager at the Bristol facility. “This has given us a 33% increase in capacity in the plate room. Now, with the Asahi AWP-DEW plates, the first plate out time will be 20 minutes, with subsequent plates delivered faster than that.” In addition to revolutionizing its plate room and

pressideas/ plc

eliminating all hazardous chemicals, The Robinette Company has also achieved significant pressroom benefits. With solvent plates, presses at Robinette delivered a 49.58% Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Now with Asahi AWP plates, that has jumped to 64.92%, a 31% increase in OEE for the press room, with reduced makeready times and fewer press stops for plate cleaning. More specifically, the average time per month it took press operators to get a job in register with solvent plates was 297 minutes, while AWP plates took an average of 151 minutes. “That’s a 50% reduction in makeready time,” Martin reports. “This is largely driven by the reduction in changeover time for jobs that share like colors, which represents about 65% of our jobs and has been reduced by two hours. Add all of that to our 33% gain in

capacity in the plate room, and it is fair to say that with Asahi AWP™-DEW plates, our plate and press rooms have been revolutionized!” Clean Transfer Technology plates from Asahi Photoproducts have been specifically engineered to transfer all remaining ink to the printed substrate. This is due to the plate’s lower surface energy. Clean Transfer Technology plates do not need to be cleaned as often as conventional digital solvent plates. Reduction of plate cleaning stops creates a significant productivity improvement as well. The Robinette Companyis the first in North America to use the next generation of Asahi

water-washable plates, AWP™-DEW, and is in the process of implementing these plates. “Our first time out for a plate with the AWP™-DEW plates is reduced from an hour to 20 minutes, with subsequent plates produced about every 15 minutes,” Martin says. “Along with this, we were also the first in the country to have Asahi’s AWP 4260 inline plate processor, which reduces water consumption by reusing the wash water and reduces the amount of operator intervention required in the platemaking process. We use the AWP 4260 for production, but we also have a smaller offline Asahi system we use in case we have a damaged plate on press and we are down. We can generate a new plate in a very short time with this system.”

Xeikon introduces the Label Discovery Package Consists of a Xeikon 3030 web-fed digital label press and its new Entry DCoat, a digital converting line that can be used inline or offline with the press.

Hosting a press conference in Antwerp, Xeikon kick-started its flagship Xeikon Café user conferencecum-exhibition with the attendance of over 1000 visitors to the show at its Lier factory in Belgium. Presenting to the press a day before the start of the event, Xeikon CEO Benoit Chatelard informed the journalists that last year the company grew by 15% contributed mainly by its expansion in China and the USA. For Xeikon, inkjet is the future, complimented by the UV technology embraced by them. The new Panther series is the DuraCure curing technology for PantherCure UV inks that combine the LED curing and mercury lamps curing bringing out the optimum benefits of the two technologies.

“The die-cut unit uses semi-rotary die-cutting technology and therefore reduces costs by as much as 50% with no need to acquire special tools and no set-up time as required with conventional diecutting.” Filip Weymans, Xeikon.

March 2019

On the dry toner front, Xeikon has introduced the Label Discovery Package that consists of a Xeikon 3030 web-fed digital label press and its new Entry DCoat, a digital converting line that can be used inline or offline with the Xeikon 3030. The machine is a fivecolour dry toner printer suitable for producing labels for a wide range of applications using standard flexo materials. Filip Weymans, vice president marketing at Xeikon emphasised that the sole objective is to deliver lowest production cost by providing printing and converting in one package. “The die-cut unit uses semi-rotary die-cutting technology and therefore reduces costs by as much as 50% with no need to

acquire special tools and no set-up time as required with conventional die-cutting,” he said. Xeikon has a choice for the new entrants with the offer of the Label Discovery Package offering those who don’t want to step in at the higher end of the market. Xeikon’s dry toner technology comes with a guarantee for food safety. In collaboration with CS Labels, Xeikon has introduced a digital printing solution for producing pouches. This latest innovation has been developed for consumer goods markets – food, beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The digital process for printing on pouches responds to current trends i.e. significant numbers of SKU’s, shorter lead times and the rising popularity of pouches in store. Brand owners looking for shelf impact for their products are drawn to flexible pouches for their ability to stand, their light weight and their sustainability. Xeikon has simplified a key part of the overall production process to provide a fast turnaround solution. Simon Smith, Managing Director CS Labels, UK, who was also a presenter and was brought in specially to speak to journalists at the press conference said, “The process involves reverse printing onto 23 micron PET at 30 metres per minute on CX500 followed by application of water-based thermal adhesive to PET using GM UCoatpress, then heat laminate on

pressideas/ plc

Xeikon CEO - Benoit Chatelard

to PE, metPET, aluminum to PET. A variety of different layers are then constructed by laminating with a series of barriers for protection before the pouch is finally put together in the manufacturing process.” There were a number of samples kept at the press conference for the visitors. One of the pouches on display, as per Simon, was turned around in 48 hours flat from the receiving the order on Tuesday, the 19th of March, Printed and laminated on Wednesday the 20th of March and converted on Thursday, the 21st of March. Incredible, isn’t it? Speaking on the occasion, Jeroen Van Bauwel, Director Product Management at Xeikon, said, “The Panther series of Xeikon digital machine was released in 2017,a UV inkjet press for SAL applications in H&B, Chemical & Durable sectors.” Panther series

Xeikon 3030+

uses PantherCure UV inks and is driven by X-800 DFE. Talking of X-800 DFE with the new Panther functionality, the printer benefits by its Automated Ink Optimization capabilities resulting in reduced prepress time along with improved uptime and reduced ink consumption, all of which is what a printer looks forward to. In addition it also helps in tactile printing for high-end labels for further embellishment and that too notably without any extra prepress of print operator effort. “The Panther DuraCure technology with a combination of UV and Mercury source surface curing helps in lower energy consumption, provides uniform gloss and reduces heat exposure to the substrate which is a major issue with many machines,” concluded Mr.Jeroen Coming to the Xeikon prepress, with an installation base of over 7000 CtPs – with about 300 in the packaging arena and the rest in newspapers – and with an existence of over 20 years, Thermoflexx according to them is the right solution for any flexo prepress. Mr.Uwe Stebani, General Manager at Xeikon Prepess said, “We have had a very successful 2018 with considerable increase in market share (new installations in Germany, China, Pakistan and Brazil) and ambitious goals for 2019”. Thermoflexx has imaging speed up to 12 sq.mtrs. per hour along with Automatic Resolution switching and reduced down-time and improved productivity for thick plates (> 3,94 mm / 0,155”). Thermoflexx also claims to give moiré free plates with the New generation TFxX –Woodpecker Series. Later the next day, the tour to the factory

at Lier, Belgium where Xeikon Café was undergoing, was a pleasure to see the technology in action. In fact our correspondent met a few Indian printers in attendance with special focus being on the digital cup printing machine. “It was interesting to see the first demonstrations of the Xeikon 3500 dry toner digital press printing on Kotkamills ISLA Duo paper cup stock which according to the paper manufacturer is not only sustainable, being plastic-free but is ideal for food packaging since the toner used is edible,” commented one of the visitors. Kotkamills board production technology and the raw materials used in the ISLA Duo production offer a high stiffness cup with a smooth and pleasing tactility. The barrier properties needed for the paper cups are produced with water-based dispersion, making it a plastic-free alternative. Unlike traditional PE coated paper cups, the water-based dispersion barrier layer of the ISLA Duo does not become charged by static electricity. This is the innovative key to achieving high printing speeds and excellent stackability properties.

Markem-Imaje expands ‘Mark & Read’ camera and software system Real-time code verification now within reach of more applications. Expansion of ‘Mark & Read’ camera and software system lets manufacturers tailor level of code verification to best suit application needs and budget. As products go down production lines, users can choose to simply check code presence on packs or also readability and data accuracy. Confirming that products are properly coded while on the production line − at the precise time they are printed – CoLOS Mark & Read minimizes scrapped production and factory rework while preventing recalls. However, the level and type of verification required varies greatly. To better address this wide range of needs, Markem-Imaje has integrated three additional cameras within its ‘Mark & Read’ code verification portfolio. Cost-effective functionality: configurable cameras tailored for differing needs The update to the company’s existing solution of four camera options is suitable for the most demanding applications: full Optical Character Recognition (OCR) data verification where codes are printed at high speeds, on curved surfaces and/or with complex backgrounds. This launch builds on CoLOS Mark & Read’s existing capabilities to handle even faster production lines. But, recognizing not all companies require such a sophisticated solution, the range has been expanded.

An entry-level camera now exists for manufacturers who are looking to more accurately set up and automate coding jobs while simply confirming code presence on products. Two mid-range cameras have also been added for basic OCR data verification of codes printed on flat surfaces with white or light-coloured backgrounds at medium to high speeds, depending on the printer. Continual, on-line barcode quality scoring can also be provided. Rather than waiting for periodic lab grading assessments to identify problems retrospectively, manufacturers can be alerted to potential barcode print quality deviations in real-time, so they can take corrective action before many products have been coded at sub-standard levels. Mark & Read is one of eight modules available within the time-tested CoLOS information management system which has over 17,000 installations worldwide. CoLOS integrates product data, line control systems, printers and code-checking equipment to ensure product coding is efficient, accurate and compliant thanks to centralized data management and automation. The line extension announced represents the first of the outputs from the joint engineering and commercial initiative announced last May by Markem-Imaje and Cognex – known

names in the coding and vision system sectors. “As with the release of CoLOS 6.0 last June, today’s launch is the latest proof of our longstanding commitment to improving coding performance for all of our customers − big and small,” says Mark Hathaway, Software Product Manager, Markem-Imaje. “It also further reinforces our market-leading position as the one-stop-shop for ensuring code compliance and verification.” Markem-Imaje, a wholly owned subsidiary of the US-based Dover Corporation is a global manufacturer of product identification and traceability solutions, offering a full line of reliable and innovative inkjet, thermal transfer, laser, and print and apply label systems.

Resino and KPG cooperate for printing casings With Resino Trykfarver and KPG Europe collaborating Digital Technology creates new opportunities for Casing Printers. For many years printers of artificial food casings have identified the potential benefits of being able to access ‘short run’ production capability, including instant image change with virtually no material waste or down-time. Through a unique cooperation between Resino Trykfarver and KPG Europe and combining the experience and skills of both companies, we are launching a digital system for printing casings in full colour, plus white.

Resino has finalized a development programme, adapting their well proven flexographic UV curing ink technology for printing artificial casings, into an inkjet applicable variant, RESUCAT 220 series. Needless to say, casings printed with this inkjet variant can be treated in the conventional way in terms of shirring, filling and autoclave processing. Naturally, the RESUCAT 220 ink series is also low migration and low odour and has no need for primer or overprint varnish. Designing the new digital system, KPG has been able to maximise the vast experience gained by supplying dual-pass flexo casing presses worldwide for many years. With pdf handling, instant data changes, choice of

print resolution and production speeds (600 X 600dpi and up to 100m/min depending on design); ‘short runs’ are now a reality for casing printers. Optional features include fully automatic production and a CID (chilled central impression drum) version will also be available. Development and extensive trials by the two companies over the past two years have culminated in this new technology being launched in the spring. At the forthcoming IFFA 2019 exhibition, using the specially formulated inks, the complete system printing polyamide casings will be demonstrated throughout the show on Stand 12.1 D18.

FreshSafe PET from KHS Association of Plastic Recyclers recognizes recyclability achievement.

Jon Elward, head of Plastic Packaging at KHS USA, Inc.

The public demand for more sustainability is growing stronger. As a result the industry is increasingly concentrating on the recyclability of PET bottles. However, this type of packaging often contains composite materials which considerably hinder simple, pure-grade recycling. KHS’ FreshSafe PET technology offers the beverage and food industries a unique alternative. A wafer-thin protective layer of chemically pure glass on the inside wall of the PET container combines product protection with full bottle-to-bottle recycling. This has now been officially acknowledged by North America’s Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR): this recognizes PET bottles coated using Plasmax barrier technology as meeting or exceeding APR’s most stringent Critical Guidance criteria for recyclability. “Plastics are being subjected to increasingly critical questioning. People want more sustainable solutions from the industry,” says Jon Elward, head of Plastic Packaging at KHS USA, Inc. “The demand for clean recycling systems in particular is steadily gaining in significance.” The gradual ousting of mixed material PET bottles which are hard to recycle is progressively opening up the market to packaging systems which are easy to recycle. In this context KHS’ FreshSafe PET technology provides a suitable alternative and has now been classified as meeting APR’s[1] most stringent Critical Guidance criteria for recycling. The wafer-thin glass coating applied to the inside wall of the bottle is washed off during the recycling process, producing pure PET. “We’ve fully

44

March 2019

satisfied the strict specifications and critical demands of the recognition process,” states Elward. “This again proves that FreshSafe PET is the only sustainable technology on the market and a reference for the recyclability of PET bottles without composite materials.” With it sensitive products such as juice, wine, sauce and liquid food are protected from oxidation and carbonated beverages from carbon dioxide loss. Furthermore, compared to standard composite materials the coating process provides a much better barrier quality and ensures much longer product shelf lives.

APR aims to improve recycling quality of PET bottles “This technology considerably facilitates recycling and at the same time improves the barrier properties of PET bottles,” confirms Steve Alexander, executive director of the APR. Through its recognition program the organization aims to improve the recycling quality of plastic bottles. According to Elward, interest among bottlers is growing in the system which has already been tried and tested many times over on the market. “There is an increasing demand for sustainable packaging.” With the recognition issued by the APR bottlers and recyclers can be

more confident the technology supports the American PET recycling market. “This is a significant step in further establishing this technology,” Elward believes. The EPBP also gives FreshSafe PET top marks. In its design guidelines the platform rates the materials used with regard to their recyclability using a traffic light system. The SiOx coating is described as being the only fully compatible barrier technology.

KHS calculates individual TCO Beverage producers of course incur additional overheads when they invest in FreshSafe PET yet these quickly pay off as the overall operating costs at the plant are reduced. When they use this system bottlers can switch to less expensive standard PET preforms, relieving them of the obligation to source preforms from a specific manufacturer. KHS offers plant operators an individual consideration of the total costs accrued when using its barrier coating technology. “Measured against the huge benefit of additional product protection and longer product shelf lives in particular, the costs per bottle are actually lower than when conventional composite materials are used,” smiles Elward.

to 64.6m2/h. It delivers incredible media flexibility to accommodate substrates up to 110mm in thickness. LED technology keeps power consumption down and cures at low temperatures, allowing for use of thinner substrates without the risk of melting or warping. Maintenance and usage are easy too, helping printers get the most out of their technology investment. One-touch automated daily maintenance cleans and purges printheads to help ensure optimum uptime. Registration pins help keep precise registration, and four individual vacuum zones hold media in place regardless of shape and size. Additionally, an auto-sensor adjusts the printheads to the correct height to maintain accuracy, and full-bleed printing capabilities eliminate the need for trimming. The Ricoh Pro TF6250 will be available across EMEA in Q2 2019.
